Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès (1880 – 1958, Belgian), Ni Pollok in Sanur Garden, watercolour and chalk on paper, 26 x 35 cm (10 1/4 x 13 3/4 in.), signed (lower leftl).
Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merprès was born in 1880 in Brussels, Belgium. He was the son of the painter Adrien-Charles-Louis Le Mayeur de Merprès (1844 – 1923) who was known for his boat and sea landscape paintings. Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merprès studied architecture and civil engineering. He was trained as a painter by his father and Ernest Blanc-Garin (1843 – 1916). He began his profession in his hometown when he was in his early twenties. He then quickly yearned to leave his village and travel the globe. Nonetheless, his culture and roots were never lost in his work. He travelled the world, stopping in the South of France at Marseille and Saint-Tropez, in Venice in Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Madagascar, India, and Tahiti, among other places. He noticed the many cultures and atmospheres in the various nations he visited, eventually reflecting them in his artwork, which was a slice of his adventures in each item he created.
Soon after, he flew to Bali, leaving with a lasting impression of the people, culture, scenery, and beautiful flowers. His travels became more frequent as he got increasingly enamoured with the island, as evidenced by his artwork. Not only did the Indonesian archipelago have a significant impact on his work, but the experiences he had there gave him a new perspective on life. Ni Pollok, his model, rapidly became a major source of inspiration for him, and the two married soon after. "Pollok" and "Di Sekitar Rumah Pollok," two of his most prominent works, were sparked by her. They established their own home on Sanur Beach, where Ni Pollok had a magnificent garden with exotic flora, which he often featured in his artwork with his wife, his lifelong muse.
Le Mayeur’s art style evolved dramatically over time, from traditional paints and themes at the start of his career to embracing more of the multifaceted cultures and styles of the countries he visited after his journeys around the globe. The luminist characteristics that he held sacred until the end of his life, have nonetheless remained persistently constant in his artwork.
Le Mayeur perished in Brussels in 1958. His discerning style will live on as his legacy. Soon after his death, the Le Mayeur Museum was established in his Villa which is located in favourite spot Sanur Beach where many of his professional accomplishments and fond memories were created. The building's traditional Balinese architecture represents his dedication and admiration of the nation and its people.
